Seven embryos made in Iowa, waiting for their forever family(ies)!
John and I have gratefully shared our lives with each other for 16 years - 12 of those years married, 9 of those years disturbed by infertility. Three beautiful children later, and we are ready to embark on the journey of searching for a couple/family (or families!) for our 7 remaining frozen embryos. We believe we were given this opportunity right now to write this profile and bless a couple/family in great need of these highly graded embryos. While they will always hold a special place in our heart, they were created to create a family other than our own.
To the best of our knowledge, our embryos are all good/great grades. They are the result of our first IVF cycle, which yielded great results – 25 eggs, 22 eggs were mature, 16 fertilized successfully after sperm injection. The lab at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) watched these 16 embryos grow over the course of 5 days, and 10 made it to day 5 and day 6. We felt so privileged! We were given TEN chances to finally conceive a sibling for our older daughter who was turning 5 years old that year.
Our first transfer of one embryo failed and ended in an early miscarriage. Our transfer of two embryos gave us our double rainbow – our boy/girl twins!
Prior to our IVF cycle, we had to discuss, what seemed at the time like some strange scenarios. We didn’t know how many embryos we would actually end up with, but we knew that if we had any “leftover” we didn’t want them to be destroyed or donated to research. But, that’s it. We didn’t discuss what that really meant. Along the way, we’ve encountered what embryo donation truly means. Our hearts feel this is the path we were meant to take. We feel our lives/our children’s lives are the greatest gifts in this world. We would like to give the greatest gift of life to our embryos, and in turn, give the gift of a family to a couple in great need or to an incomplete family (much like we were during our IVF cycle).
At this time, we are very early in our search for the perfect recipient(s), so we’re not entirely sure what our preferences are. Honestly, we don’t have too many. We believe the universe will bring us our perfect match(es) and our hearts will know when we’ve found them.
