 Infertility diagnosis or N/A:
We are a male/female couple who came to IVF in an unusual way. In 2010, our first baby, conceived the old fashioned way, was born very sick. He had a mitochondrial disorder that primarily affected his heart, and lived just nine weeks. Losing him was devastating. We were desperate to have another child, but we waited to find out whether his illness was something that might recur in another child. After nearly a year of testing, a lot got ruled out, but no diagnosis could be found. Our geneticist was convinced, however, that whatever he had was autosomal recessive, meaning that we are both carriers and that there would be a 25% chance of of passing our son's illness on to any of our children--a risk we weren't willing to take. The only way around it was to replace one of us with a donor. We chose a sperm donor, and were able to have two beautiful, healthy children via IVF.

Hobbies/Interests/Other info (Please also clarify any answers from above or include any info you would like to share)

The donor sounds like a really nice guy. He is musical and athletic, handy and able to build and fix things, and an animal lover. His family health history is great. We have more information about him from the sperm bank which we’ll be happy to share with whomever we decide to move forward with.

I am a writer, as I mentioned above, and reading is the great passion of my life--particularly fiction. Art and music are also super-important to me. I love sew--I make a lot of clothes for myself and my children--and I dabble in other crafts, like knitting, crochet, and needlework.

In the interest of full disclosure, I want to mention that I am a cancer survivor. I was diagnosed with stage I rectal cancer 11 years ago at the age of 28, and had surgery to remove the tumor. I am considered cured. There was no family history, and genetic testing didn’t turn up a genetic cause. I am committed to having new testing done whenever new genetic causes of colorectal cancer are discovered, and would share any new information with the family or families who take our embryos.
