Donating Embryos
Donating Embryos
Anyone who has gone through infertility will recall the anguish of thinking you may never have children. Hopefully, through the help of reproductive technologies, you have succeeded and now you have your own children. But if you have been left with frozen embryos in storage maybe you are exploring the options and challenges of what to do with them.

Embryo Donation/Adoption
Embryo Donation and Embryo Adoption are similar concepts, and sometimes the terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to the giving and receiving of fertilized eggs (embryos) that are created during an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) cycle.

During the process of IVF more embryos may be created than will be used. Once the individuals involved have determined that they will not use the additional embryos themselves, they are faced with the challenge of what to do with them. Their options, depending on their state of residence and the policies of the clinic used, are to:

Continue to maintain them in storage indefinitely
Thaw and donít use (or transfer in a way that is unlikely or impossible to result in pregnancy)
Donate them to scientific research
Donate them to someone else who wants to conceive (embryo donation)

Embryo donation can provide the opportunity to assist others who want to conceive by donating available embryos and giving someone else the chance to start or add to their own family.

Miracles Waiting
How can Miracles Waiting help those interested in donating embryos?

Miracles Waiting does not turn anyone down because of race, age, marital status, sexual preferences, or religion. We feel that such requirements are the concern of those donating and receiving embryos in accordance with their own preferences, circumstances and beliefs, and should not be determined by this organization. We offer embryo donors and recipients the opportunity to find each other, but we allow them the freedom to work out the details of their embryo donation on their own terms. We have been very successful in this endeavor and have made hundreds of matches, many of which have resulted in pregnancies.

Please understand while we try to give prompt attention to your questions and concerns, we appreciate your patience. We ask that you please read through all of the information on our website, as it is very informative. Please understand that we are NOT a clinic. We do NOT select recipients or donors, and we don't do embryo transfers ourselves. What we can do is help you post a profile or respond to those posted, so that you can make a match and be able to donate or receive embryos. After that, you will need to contact your fertility clinic to determine how to proceed.

Posting/responding to profiles

There is no charge for donors wishing to post a profile or to browse the profiles of recipients.
We do ask that if you are successful in making a match to please let us know.

To post a profile with us you will
first need to subscribe for membership. To subscribe please follow the link "Membership Subscription" under the "Registered User Menu" after you are logged in at the site. You will need to follow the "Membership Subscription" link and subscribe with the "Donor Membership" level. After you get through the membership process you will gain access to our listings and be able to post a profile and/or contact recipients and also will gain access to our forums.

The Donation Process Itself

After a match is made through our site, the donor and recipient usually have their clinics handle the shipping of the embryos, the transfer, etc. We have found that most of the larger clinics in the U.S. have experience with embryo donation. They will sometimes refer to this situation as a "known donation" since you and the recipient will have some knowledge and information about each other. Each clinic will have a different policy regarding known donations, so be sure to talk to your doctor about this. You will also want to ask them about fees and other important aspects of the process.

Is there a cost to those donating embryos?

There are no fees for the donating/genetic parents. The recipient families cover all costs.

General costs associated with embryo donation for the recipient

As with most medical procedures, costs will vary depending on the individual patient, clinic used, and insurance coverage (if any). Some common costs are given below for informational purposes. Please keep in mind that they vary greatly from clinic to clinic, and the following information is merely garnered from our own experience and not intended to be comprehensive:

Retesting of donors for infectious diseases

$100 - $500

Infectious disease screening of recipient
$100 - $500

Legal contract
$500 - $3,000
may vary greatly

Shipping of embryos
$200 - $500

Prescription drugs
$500 - $2,500

Blood work and ultrasounds
$500 - $2,000

Frozen Embryo Transfer

$900 - $4,000+
may vary greatly

In some states, it is also legal to reimburse the donor for embryo storage expenses. We strongly advise you to check with an attorney familiar with the embryo donation laws in your state before doing this, however. Also, please know that in all states it is illegal to pay for the embryos themselves!

Again, we ask that you read the information on this website to learn more. We have spent many hours compiling it for you.To learn more about the process of embryo donation please visit this link:
